School Initiatives

Amber Flag Award

St. Teresa’s National School became involved in the Amber Flag Initiative over four years ago to highlight and promote well-being and positive mental health among pupils. The flag is awarded to schools who engage in activities to promote an ethos of positive mental health.

The Amber Flag Committee led by teachers Siobhán Kearney and Deirdre Laide embarked on a thoroughly enjoyable mission to improve the overall happiness and health of the children at St. Teresa’s, N.S. Kilflynn. The Committee comprising of teachers and pupils collaborated to create many enjoyable activities over the academic years.

Green Schools Flag

Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment.

Unlike a once-off project, it is a long-term programme that introduces participants (students, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the concept of an environmental management system.

However, Green-Schools is far more than just an environmental management system.

The Daily Mile

We are proud to be part of The Daily Mile Ireland. The Daily Mile is 15 minutes wherein children jog or run, at their own pace, during the school day at a time of the teacher’s choosing. We recommend this be during lesson time, so children have their full break / play time. The Daily Mile is not Sport or PE, but rather health and wellbeing through physical activity. It’s a simple and straightforward implementation that has been acknowledged for reducing childhood obesity.

The Daily Mile Foundation recommend schools introduce The Daily Mile to children as a run or jog, not as a walk. If implemented as per Core Principles, almost all children will be able to run for most, or all of, the way after around 4 weeks. This level of fitness will be maintained or improved over the coming months and years.

Active School Flag

St. Teresa’s National School is officially an Active School. We recevied our Active School Flag in June 2022.

The Active School Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative which recognises schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community, by awarding them with the Active School Flag (ASF).

The aim of the Active Schools Flag is to encourage schools to be more active, more often. It links in with all of the work we are doing throughout the year on Healthy Living – being active, getting exercise, taking care of our minds and bodies.
